Inter-protocol gateway - ISIT

Inter-protocol gateway

Inter-protocol gateway development: On request, ISIT designs software gateways - with or without hardware - enabling communication between equipment using different industrial protocols.

In many industrial applications, heterogeneous equipment must exchange data, even though they are based on different networks or fieldbuses: CAN, CANopen, J1939, EtherNet/IP, proprietary protocols, etc.

Standard solutions on the market (software, modules, communication boxes) do not always cover the specific needs of all possible architectures, especially when :

  • Protocols have been modified to better suit the context of one of the chain's devices
  • One of the devices is based on a proprietary protocol, possibly derived from a standard
  • One of the devices relies on a specific interface, not supported by these protocols (e.g. a serial link)
  • One of the devices uses a partially implemented or incomplete protocol. Data must be transformed or reformatted before transfer
  • The transfer function must be as real-time as possible
  • Mechanical, physical or functional constraints make standard products unsuitable
  • Off-the-shelf solutions are oversized and too expensive

ISIT expertise at your service for interoperability

In this situation, it is imperative to design a specialized technical solution that meets multiple and complex criteria. This is precisely where ISIT's expertise comes into its own.

Our expert combines in-depth mastery of embedded real-time systems with advanced skills in industrial networks, regardless of the technological protocol implemented. This dual expertise enables us to offer you a customized study, specifically designed to meet your communication interoperability requirements.

A proven solution: ISI-GTW

To meet these needs, ISIT has developed ISI-GTW, an intelligent, versatile and fully programmable communication gateway.

It enables heterogeneous equipment with CAN or Ethernet interfaces to communicate, even if the protocols used are different, proprietary or incompatible.

Here are just a few examples of the combinations made possible by ISI-GTW and ad-hoc development:
  • Serial Gateway <> CANopen Gateway
  • Serial Gateway <> Proprietary CAN
  • CANopen Master Gateway <> CAN owner
  • CANopen Slave Gateway <> proprietary CAN
  • SAE J1939 Gateway <> CAN owner
  • CANopen Slave Gateway <> SAE J1939
  • CANopen Master Gateway <> EtherNet/IP (CIP)
  • EtherNet/IP Gateway (CIP) <> Proprietary CAN
  • EtherNet/IP Gateway (CIP) <> SAE J1939
  • Proprietary TCP/IP Gateway <> Proprietary CAN

ISIT has the skills and resources to carry out these software developments for other hardware platforms.

In a context of operational safety, these software developments are carried out in compliance with the requirements of functional safety standards such as IEC 61508.
